What is yoni steaming?

Yoni steaming is an ancient wellness practice for female-bodied people, involving the application of herb-infused steam to the pelvic region.

Also called vaginal steaming (or pelvic steaming), this luxurious form of self-care is renowned for its ability to rebalance difficult menstrual cycles, fertility challenges, and a whole host of other feminine health issues throughout the various cycles of a woman’s life.

Who is it for?
While any person can benefit from steaming the pelvic region, yoni steaming is specifically practiced by people with female genitalia and reproductive structures (regardless of gender expression / identity).

It is safe for almost every part of a woman’s life journey – girls approaching menarche, menstruating women (though not specifically while bleeding), peri- to post-menopausal women, and especially postpartum women. However, it is crucial to seek the guidance of a qualified steam facilitator; every stage of life mentioned here has slightly different needs, and every woman has unique conditions. The right steam plan is essential.

There are times when it’s not appropriate to steam. Ask a certified facilitator about contraindications before steaming on your own.

How does it work?
At this point, there’s no conclusive research on how this practice truly works, but there are several likely theories:

  • The heat from the steam increases circulation to the pelvic region, which improves uterine function.
  • The herbs may enter the bloodstream through the highly absorptive tissues of the vaginal area.
  • From the perspective of Chinese medicine, the steam stimulates a point on the “conception vessel” meridian (CV1). This point is responsible for circulating qi (energy) throughout the entire body.
What can steaming help with?
Women all over the world have received incredible benefits through the practice of steaming. Common areas of relief include:

  • Period problems (cramps, clots, absent periods, short cycles, long cycles, heavy bleeding, and acne)
  • Infertility
  • Infections
  • Fibroids
  • Cysts and other “bumps”
  • Endometriosis symptoms
  • PCOS symptoms
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Labor preparation
  • Postpartum recovery
  • Miscarriage & abortion recovery
  • Natural induction of “missed miscarriage”
  • Prolapse
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Low libido
  • Scar tissue
  • Sexual abuse trauma recovery
What should I expect during my session?

During the session, we’ll go through a short intake form to discover the best herbs and steam setup for you, as well as screening you for any unique sensitivies. You’ll sit on a special steam chair over a pot of water and herbs that are releasing steam (never too hot — we always check the temperature beforehand), and simply enjoy the sensations!

Your privacy will of course be maintained throughout the session; sensitive areas will be covered while you're steaming, and I'll leave the room while you're getting settled in (similar to a massage appointment).

I offer several options for how to spend your time during the steam session: enjoy a guided meditation, relax in silence, be led through a breathing exercise to enliven the energy centers, or simply sit and chat casually if you prefer.

Please be aware that steaming is *contraindicated* at certain times:

  1. If you are currently having your moon cycle (actively bleeding)
  2. If you are pregnant
  3. If you are experiencing a burning itch on or around your vulva

Steam Sessions & Consultations

Quick Consult (via email; $33)

Get personalized recommendations for herbs and steam setup to use at home. Includes a basic steam plan.

Initial Steam Session ($60)

Experience a steam session in person. We’ll go through a short intake form to discover the best herbs and steam setup for you. You’ll also receive a basic steam plan that you can keep using at home.

Comprehensive Steam Consult ($125)

For those who are seeking to balance a specific gynecological issue using steam; we’ll go through a much more in-depth intake form together, typically via phone or video chat. You’ll receive an advanced steam plan to carry out on your own, and we’ll continue to communicate for 3 months following the consult, to monitor progress and make any adjustments to the plan as needed. Initial steam session included, if you're local to the Sedona (AZ) area.

All packages above will also receive a handout about how to steam at home safely, including contraindications.
For in-person steam sessions, a 50% minimum deposit is required to book the appointment.

Please note that you cannot steam if you are currently bleeding, pregnant, or dealing with a burning itch on or around your vulva. Do your best to schedule your steam session so that it does not align with your moontime flow, as deposits are non-refundable. There is no fee to reschedule.

Herbs & Steam Saunas

While I do offer herbs for sale during in-person steam sessions, I always encourage my clients to simply purchase the herbal blends from my supplier if they would like to continue steaming at home on their own. The herbs from my supplier, Steamy Chick, are the best available (in my opinion) which is of course why I use them in all my steam sessions — with clients and for myself. If you’re not sure which herbs are for you (even after reading through the descriptions on Steamy Chick’s page), I recommend signing up for the “quick consult” package listed above.

For many clients who receive advanced steam plans from me, consecutive days of steaming may be required. I recommend that clients purchase a steam sauna chair of their own, but I also have steam saunas available for clients to rent while they carry out their steam plan, if they are not ready to purchase one.

I typically have saunas available for sale (locally only) for $150 each, so send me a message if you’re interested in seeing some pictures of the model I offer. I don’t ship them, and if I don’t have one in stock, it could be up to two months before another is made. At this point, they are very “special-order”, which is why I don’t list pictures readily on this website.
